Professor Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai is a retired justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal. He holds M.A (English & Pol. Sc.) from Tribhuvan University, and LL.M & JSD from National Law School of India University. He is also a recipient of Hubert Humphrey Fellowship (2002-03) for research studies at MIT, USA and Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2005-06) at Max Planck Institute of Comparative Public Law and International Law, Germany.
Dr Bhattarai has also authored 4 books and contributed several dozens of articles on legal issues in national and international Journals. His book “Protection of Himalayan Biodiversity” (Sage, 2010) received wide reviews at home and abroad.
Dr. Bhattarai has handed down many landmark decisions in wide arrays of areas including the Constitution, tax law, human rights, gender justice, criminal justice, heritage protection and environmental and climate justice from the Supreme Court of Nepal.
Among them, decisions on protection of Cow (national animal of Nepal), Chitwan National Park (oldest and largest park in Nepal), heritage property of Lord Pashupatinath (world famous Shiva temple), flood and natural disasters, and banning excavation and export of stone, boulders etc. to India from the Churia region are much acclaimed for promoting cause of environmental justice and heritage conservation.
Justice Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, as a Visiting Professor, serves as a Member of the Faculty Board and leads the Center for Environmental and Climate Justice (CECJ)
