Vice Chancellor's Notes

I would like to welcome you to the newly established Kathmandu University School of Law (KUSL). KUSL, the latest addition, is the seventh school of the university. Although this is a new school, it was envisioned right from the time of inception of KU. We were waiting for the right moment; appropriate infrastructure, capable faculty members, broad need based curriculum and a visionary leadership. In 2014, all these components came together and enabled us to take steps to formally establish this school. This year, we are ready to welcome our second batch of law students. Our aim is to provide broad, need- based quality legal education and produce well-trained, highly competent, morally-equipped lawyers in the society.

Kathmandu University (KU), since its conception, has adhered to its mission of providing 'quality education for leadership'. With its rich history, vibrant academic community, accomplished students and distinguished alumni, KU offers an extraordinary environment in which to study law. We put high value in producing skilled graduates who have excellent job prospects in Nepal and abroad. We provide an environment that is conducive to learning for a culturally and ethnically diverse population, on a student friendly campus. KU has an international outlook but also a strong commitment to address issues of this region. In addition to the experienced full-time faculty, the teaching team is complemented by a panel of distinguished international adjunct faculty from a consortium of leading accredited universities across the world. KU community extends far beyond the campus; we have research, teaching and student exchange partnerships with renowned universities and institutions around the world.

We are certain that the newly established School of Law will be successful in our mission of providing quality education for leadership. Nepal, at present, is in a state of transition, gearing towards a federal state with equality, justice and the rule of law. In light of this, legal experts will be needed to play key roles in this transformation. We are therefore in need of competent, knowledgeable and skilled lawyers who will not only help promote justice and harmony in our society but also help safeguard the rights of all citizens and solve important social issues. A sound legal education based on socially pertinent, comprehensive, practice based curriculum is the backbone of the legal system in a country. We, at KU constantly seek to deliver the best in education and I am certain that KUSL will continue this proud tradition. The newly appointed Dean of KUSL, Dr. Bipin Adhikari, a leading constitutional jurist of Nepal, together with his strong and dedicated team will provide the right impetus for this law school to prosper.

I would like to encourage you to use this website and become involved in our new legal community. Please do join in our conversations, either electronically or in person and explore our website to learn about all the exciting things going on in KUSL. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have been instrumental in the establishment of this school. I would also like to extend my hearty welcome to the new batch of law students. I wish you the best and hope that the next few years will be a wonderful and positively life altering experience for each and every one of you as you take the first step towards a professional legal career.
